Pentagon stops all border wall construction projects paid for with military funds

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration announced Friday that it would cancel all construction on the border wall that was paid for using redirected military funds, a Defense Department spokesman said. The Trump administration increased its use of Defense dollars to build portions of the border wall after Congress refused to appropriate money toward the project in early 2019. On Friday, Deputy Pentagon Spokesman Jamal Brown said, “Consistent with [President Biden’s] proclamation, the Department of Defense is proceeding with canceling all border barrier construction projects paid for with funds originally intended for other military missions and functions such as schools for military children, overseas military construction projects in partner nations, and the National Guard and Reserve equipment account.” Source: Pentagon stops all border wall construction projects paid for with military funds The article was originally published here!

‘Disaster Girl’ NFT Sells For Nearly $500,000 : NPR

Zoë Roth was internet famous before many of us knew what that was. When she was 4, her dad  took a picture  of her standing in front of a burning house and a firetruck. She's looking back at the camera knowingly, leaving the viewer to suspect she had something to do with this disaster. But in reality, the fire scene was part of a training exercise for firefighters in Mebane, N.C., near where Zoë and her father, Dave Roth, lived. Now, Zoë is a 21-year-old senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who works at an Italian restaurant. Earlier this month came a big payoff for all this fame: A “nonfungible token,” or NFT, of the original copy of the iconic photo sold at auction for nearly $500,000. The buyer is 3F Music, a music studio based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which has collected several other NFTs. Image
Jerusalem — A stampede at a religious festival attended by tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews in northern Israel killed at least 45 people and injured about 150 early Friday, medical officials said. It was one of the country's deadliest civilian disasters. The Consulate General of Israel in New York on Friday confirmed that four of the dead were U.S. citizens. It said in a statement that it was “working with the families of all those who died and were injured to enter Israel as easily and quickly as possible.” The stampede began when large numbers of people thronged a narrow tunnel-like passage during the event, according to witnesses and video footage. People began falling on top of each other near the end of the walkway, as they descended slippery metal stairs, witnesses said. Tony Blair has a mullet now, and it’s disturbing Britain – CNN

Image
London (CNN) Few former world leaders have had their legacy debated as fiercely as Tony Blair. And now, it appears the longtime UK prime minister has animated Britons again, debuting an astonishing lockdown haircut that has raised eyebrows far beyond the political landscape. The ex-Labour leader gave his first television interview in several weeks on Tuesday, speaking with CNN affiliate ITV News about the stability of the United Kingdom in the face of Scotland's independence movement. But it was his arresting mullet that was of greatest concern to many commentators, and within hours Blair — along with several aging celebrities to whom he was likened — was trending on social media for all the wrong reasons. Rudy Giuliani: Office and Apartment RAIDED

Image
1 Rudy Giuliani's office and apartment were raided by federal investigators. Federal agents  raided the apartment and office  of former President Donald Trump's longtime attorney  Rudy Giuliani  on Wednesday, an extraordinary move in the Justice Department's ongoing criminal probe. The shocking development is part of the two-year investigation into Giuliani's political activities in Ukraine. He hasn't been charged and denies all wrongdoing. CNN This roughly translates to “he will be charged and convicted.” A federal grand jury has been impaneled for the Giuliani investigation. Apparently, all Rudy roads lead to Ukraine. Remember, Giuliani got a very well-respected ambassador fired ( Marie Yovanovitch ) back in May 2019. She became a critical witness in the first Trump impeachment. Remember this name: Robert Costello . He's Giuliani's lawyer. He also represents Steve Bannon . He's got a bigly job ahead of him. NEW YORK — Brendan Hunt, an enthusiastic Trump supporter who called for killing members of Congress days after the Jan. 6 insurrection, was found guilty Wednesday of making a death threat against elected officials. It took the jury in his case about three hours to reach a verdict, finding that comments Hunt made in a disturbing video posted online two days after the U.S. Capitol riot amounted to a genuine threat to murder elected officials in Washington. He faces up to 10 years in prison. Biden speaks to Indian prime minister – The Washington Post

Image
Amid an unprecedented rise in coronavirus cases and deaths in India, President Biden spoke with the country’s prime minister on Monday and pledged assistance. Biden told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the United States will provide “oxygen-related supplies, vaccine materials and therapeutics,” according to a readout from the White House on the call. The United States was under increased pressure to offer assistance to India, which has emerged as the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. The aid agreement came the same day the White House, under pressure to help vaccinate the global population, announced it would share up to 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine with other countries. India 2021 Mirrors New York 2020 (COVID-19)

Image
1 This seems eerily familiar. Deaths have been steadily rising in India as a deadly second wave of Covid infections devastates the country, with 380 recorded in Delhi alone on Monday. Medical oxygen, intensive care unit (ICU) beds and life-saving medicines are in short supply. India has recorded more than a million Covid-19 cases in just a few days. The number of reported cases declined slightly on Tuesday, to 323,144 from the peak of 352,991 the day before, bringing the total number of Indian cases so far to nearly 17 million with 192,000 deaths. Cheney: Congressional commission should narrowly review Capitol siege – Axios

Image
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the third highest-ranking House Republican, publicly broke from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) Monday, telling reporters a proposed independent commission should focus solely on the deadly Capitol insurrection, Reuters reports. Why it matters: Cheney's remarks reflect a widening gap between the two high-profile Republicans. McCarthy has said the bipartisan commission should broaden its scope to include other instances of political violence, citing Black Lives Matter and Antifa protests. What she's saying: “What happened on Jan. 6 is unprecedented in our history, and I think that it's very important that the commission be able to focus on that,” Cheney told reporters at the House GOP's annual policy retreat in Florida, per Reuters. Beavers Take Down Canada Internet Service After Chewing Cables

Image
Rascally beavers took down internet service for about 900 customers in a remote Canadian community this weekend after gnawing through crucial fiber cables, the Candian Broadcasting Corporation reported Sunday. The outage, which has since been resolved, also affected 60 cable TV customers and disrupted local cell phone service, according to a statement from the area’s provider, Telus. Tumbler Ridge, a tiny municipality in northeastern British Columbia with a population of about 2,000 people, lost service for roughly 36 hours in what Telus described as a “uniquely Canadian disruption!” “Beavers have chewed through our fibre cable at multiple points, causing extensive damage,” said Telus spokesperson Liz Sauvé in an email to Gizmodo. Roku says it may lose YouTube TV app after Google made anti-competitive demands – Axios

Image
Roku on Monday notified its users via email that YouTube TV may be forced off its platform entirely, alleging anti-competitive demands from Google that include requests for preferential treatment of its YouTube TV and YouTube apps. Why it matters: It's one of the first big carriage disputes around anti-competitive behavior in the streaming era. Unlike most streaming TV carriage fights, Roku says it's not asking for more money, but for better terms around anti-competitive demands from Google — such as being asked to favor Google products in Roku search results. Roku and Google compete on a number of fronts, including smart TV hardware devices, smart TV operating systems and smart TV content. The carriage agreement between the two companies is set to expire imminently.
