Atlanta Mayor’s Shooting Response Watched Closely After Protests Speech

In the course of a five-minute speech, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms became a national figure credited with trying to soothe tensions across her city and saw her stature rise as a possible running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

“When I saw the murder of George Floyd, I hurt like a mother would hurt,” Ms. Bottoms said at a news conference May 29 as people across the country protested Mr. Floyd’s killing while in police custody in Minneapolis.
