They stormed the Capitol to overturn the results of an election they didn’t vote in – CNN

(CNN)They were there to “Stop the Steal” and to keep the President they revered in office, yet records show that some of the rioters who stormed the US Capitol did not vote in the very election they were protesting. One was Donovan Crowl, an ex-Marine who charged toward a Capitol entrance in paramilitary garb on January 6 as the Pro-Trump crowd chanted “who’s our President?” Federal authorities later identified Crowl, 50, as a member of a self-styled militia organization in his home state of Ohio and affiliated with the extremist group the Oath Keepers. His mother told CNN that he previously told her “they were going to overtake the government if they…tried to take Trump’s presidency from him.” She said he had become increasingly angry during the Obama administration and that she was aware of his support for former President Donald Trump. The latest on Biden’s presidency: Live updates – The Washington Post

President Biden has invited 10 Republican senators to the White House on Monday afternoon for what an aide describes as “a full exchange of views” about their $600 billion counterproposal to his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan. Ahead of the meeting, Biden tweeted that “we need urgent action” and said that his plan would “put our nation on a path to build back better.” The Democratic-led Senate is also planning this week to advance several more of Biden’s Cabinet nominees and continue preparations for the second impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol. Palm Beach reviewing Trump’s residency at Mar-a-Lago | TheHill

The town of Palm Beach, Fla., confirmed to The Hill on Friday that it’s performing a legal review of former President Trump’s residency at Mar-a-Lago after suggesting that it might do so in December. “Our town attorney is reviewing the agreement and the laws surrounding it,” Palm Beach Town Manager Kirk Blouin told The Hill. Trump relocated to his Florida club on the morning of Jan. 20 after leaving office, before President Biden was sworn in. The former president’s decision to make Mar-a-Lago his permanent residence could be a violation of rules set forward in a previous agreement with the town when he decided to convert the private residence into a club in 1993.Among those conditions were that club members, including Trump, could only spend a maximum of seven consecutive days and no more than three weeks a year at the premises, CNN reports. Blouin told the Miami Herald last month that the town was unaware of Trump’s intent to permanently reside...

Tens of thousands of voters drop Republican affiliation after Capitol riot | TheHill

Image
More than 30,000 voters who had been registered members of the Republican Party have changed their voter registration in the weeks after a mob of pro-Trump supporters attacked the Capitol — an issue that led the House to impeach the former president for inciting the violence. The massive wave of defections is a virtually unprecedented exodus that could spell trouble for a party that is trying to find its way after losing the presidential race and the Senate majority. It could also represent the tip of a much larger iceberg: The 30,000 who have left the Republican Party reside in just a few states that report voter registration data, and information about voters switching between parties, on a weekly basis.
