30 million Americans have filed initial unemployment claims since mid-March

Image
New York (CNN Business) Millions more Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, as the coronavirus crisis continued to weigh on the US economy. First-time claims for unemployment benefits totaled 3.8 million in the week ending April 25, after factoring in seasonal adjustments, the US Department of Labor said . Without those adjustments — which economists use to account for seasonal hiring fluctuations — the raw number was 3.5 million. That brings the total number of first-time claims to 30.3 million over the past six weeks — representing roughly 18.6% of the US labor force — as businesses have laid off and furloughed workers during stay-at-home orders across the country. Tesla stock falls as extended shelter order dampens hope for California factory

Image
Shares of Tesla Inc. TSLA, -2.07% fell in the extended session Monday after San Francisco Bay Area authorities extended the regional shelter-in-place orders through the end of May, quashing hopes that Tesla’s Fremont, Calif., factory would restart soon. Tesla stock ended the regular Monday session up 10% on a report that the factory, Tesla’s only U.S. car-making plant, was readying a resumption of operations as the Bay Area’s shutdown orders were due to expire next week. CNBC reported late Monday such plans were abandoned with the extension of the regional shelter-in-place order. Tesla and local authorities had sparred over the factory, which was not considered essential and shut down in late March. Models Show Reopening States Too Early Will Bring Deadlier Outcomes

Image
(CNN) Seven coronavirus models show US deaths from coronavirus will keep rising in the coming weeks. But how sharply the death toll rises depends on how much “contact reduction” Americans practice , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The models estimate the forecast numbers of cases and deaths on the state and national levels, and one model from the University of Texas at Austin makes metro-area projections. “State-level forecasts vary widely, reflecting differences in early epidemic phases, timing of interventions, and model-specific assumptions,” the CDC says. Models that factor in strong contact reduction suggest new deaths will continue to occur, but will “slow substantially over the next four weeks,” the CDC said. A Virginia preacher believed ‘God can heal anything.’ Then he caught coronavirus.

Image
Landon Spradlin went to Mardi Gras to save souls. He never made it home. “I don’t believe there are incurable diseases. God can heal anything,” Landon said during an interview at a 2016 motorcycle rally in Daytona Beach, Fla. “There are documented cases of God healing AIDS. God can cause limbs to grow out where they’ve been chopped off. God can raise the dead.” A new malady had emerged as his Mardi Gras ministry ended last month. But not everyone acknowledged its threat. Three days before leaving, Landon — an avid Trump supporter — posted a meme on his Facebook page about the coronavirus, which at the time had killed about 40 people in the United States. The media, it warned, was trying to “manipulate your life” by creating “mass hysteria.” As the truck picked up speed on Interstate 10, the pastor who believed in prophecy had no idea what lay ahead — isolation, unanswered prayers and a horrific death that would make his Facebook post the target of widespread derision . When ...

Creep Collared For Using His Hands To “Talk” To Female Walmart Shopper

Image
A man arrested yesterday for twice grabbing the rear end of a female Walmart shopper explained to Florida police “that is how he talks to women,” according to a court affidavit. Cops say the 29-year-old victim was walking through a Walmart in Largo, a city outside Tampa, when she noticed Juan Antonio Velez was following her. At one point, the woman told cops, the 6’ 3”, 250-pound Velez “walked up to her and grabbed her butt. ”The victim said that Velez, 30, then continued to follow her. When she got to the self-checkout line, the woman said, Velez again groped her buttocks, prompting her to tell him to “stop it.” The woman subsequently told Walmart management “she was afraid, so they took her to an office,” a Largo Police Department officer reported. When police questioned Velez, he reportedly confessed to “grabbing her butt twice and said that is how he talks to women.” Velez, cops say, acknowledged that he touched the victim “prior to making any conversation” with her.
